You'll Need More Than an Umbrella

More and more of the rain we experience in the world is acid rain. It happens particularly close to concentrated industrial areas. It is produced when nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide in the upper atmosphere react with water particles to produce nitric acid, carbonic acid and sulfuric acid respectively.

Normally rainwater is naturally slightly alkaline, having a pH of 7.1 to 7.3 pH. It picks up a small amount of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. It is soft water and before major industrialization it was wonderful for washing your hair and your clothes. Now rain barrels are not such a good thing. The pH of acid rain water ranges from about 4.1 to 5.5, which is acidic enough to corrode marble and granite. I can't imagine watering my plants with it.

Acid rain can contain high amounts of carbon dioxide which form carbonic acid, depending on the local industries.

When you burn coal or other fossil fuels, it releases sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere, which dissolves in atmospheric water and makes sulfuric acid. Sulfuric acid reacts with a wide range of substances normally found in fruits, vegetables, meats, poultry and fish. It affects their growth and their content of vitamins, minerals, protein and essential fatty acids. This acid also can damage rocks, trees, animals and plants. In strong concentrations, it can burn surfaces and tissues and can be carcinogenic with prolonged exposure.

The third type of pollutant that causes acid rain is nitric acid. It too, is highly carcinogenic and corrosive. One of the curious things about nitric acid is that is a powerful dehydrating agent. It is dangerous to humans because of its powerful action of pulling water out of molecules during chemical reactions. The human body is 70 percent water and most reactions in the body use water during part of the chemical exchange.

Other acids also form that cause acid rain, notably hydrochloric acid, organic carboxylic acid, acetic acid and formic acid. These acids are formed when volatile organic compounds are oxidized in the air.

Because of its acidic and corrosive nature, acid rain causes numerous toxic and injurious effects. Not only is it harmful to humans, fish, animals, trees, crops, other types of vegetation, buildings, monuments, metals, automobiles and soils, it can affect fish and animal fertility, feeding patterns and behavior, corrode metals and reduce soil fertility.

Acid rain can raise the levels of heavy metals in drinking water supplies. Some of these heavy metals are poisonous and will compromise health fairly quickly. Along with heavy metals, other toxic metals, carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds, photochemical oxidants and a huge shopping list of other toxins that can pose serious health threats are raised in water ways affected by acid rain.

Some acid rain toxins can enter the human body through the skin when we are exposed to it or through our lungs when we breathe. Acid rain can also pollute fruits and vegetables as they grow, posing health threats over time. Meat that we eat is affected by animals that are out in the weather that absorb acid rain through their skin or the plants that they eat that have been exposed to acidic rain. Heavy metals, industrial and chemical pollutants collect in the soft tissues of the animals' bodies which we eat. Once in our bodies, these toxins cannot be metabolized so the body becomes defensive and stores them in our connective and fatty tissues. We accumulate these acids over time, along with the metabolic acids that we acquire from our food metabolism.

To rid the body of these dangerous acids, we look to the plant kingdom to the green plants. Cilantro is great for removing heavy metals from the body. Blue-green algae is another great chelator. Juicing and greens powders are other alternatives to bringing more alkaline foods into the diet. By becoming more alkaline in nature and reducing your risk for serious illness you are insuring your health as you get older. By getting hold of an alkaline foods list and doing periodic cleanses, you reduce the acidic accumulation that is so harmful to health. Your naturopath can test you for harmful residues that may be lurking and make recommendations to help you clean your body of them. After all, the senior years are there to enjoy the fruits of your labor over the years, so you can enjoy life.

Jean Perrins is a retired nurse and an alkaline, ionized water specialist. She has been field testing the effects of structured water on health in her clinic with sometimes astounding results. It is clear that water has an affect on health that we, in the West are just beginning to understand.

Jean is currently working with a team to develop microbicidal and Free Active Chlorine applications to revolutionize industrial and agricultural methods using Invins-AbleTM electrochemically activated water. She and her team believe that Invins-AbleTM will help eliminate antibiotic and hormone use in food animals and will allow cleaning and chemical services to do more and more processes with this structured water. The economic and environmental savings are astounding. Check out http://www.drinkalkalineionizedwater.com for more articles.

Three Currently Emerging Global Influences

In the 1990's our World changed, as the Cold war ended, and our societies slowly evolved into a Global economy. Through these changes, we are seeing three emerging issues that are affecting the way we live, study, think and work today-Challenges that are shaping our very own attitudes towards the future.

What are these Three Global Issues that are emerging today?

1. Global Warming

No one is sure how Global warming will truly affect us, but some societies are already planning ahead. The Netherlands for example expects part of the Country to be permanently reclaimed by the sea, so already floating homes, roads and communities are already being developed. The effects of Global warming are being felt everywhere, but how are we going to adjust to them?.

2. Poverty

Our Economies are changing, as a natural consequence of Globalization, technology and over population-This creates poverty as our populations grow, and opportunities change.

Currently around 25% of the Worlds population lives on less than a dollar a day, when food prices are rising, and land is being lost due to global warming. Accepting poverty is one thing, but how do we deal with the consequences if it reaches our own backyards?.

3. Reduced Natural Resources

Currently newly emerging Industrialized countries are competing with the USA, and Europe for natural resources. This is creating an emerging need to create greener energies, to offset a future shortage of resources. As populations grow, so does the need to use more resources.

2009 was the year of change, and as the emerging issues of land loss, want, and less resources becomes more prominent. We may need to plan towards creating a solution for ourselves, our families and our communities to overcome these three very real challenges to our future lifestyles.

Environmentally Friendly Cars - What Lies Ahead

Electric, hybrid, bio-ethanol, fuel cell? Which is best? Is it really green? These are just some of the questions facing the motor industry around the world as they are put under more and more pressure to produce low / no carbon emission transport.

Most major motor manufacturers have been exploring Green Technology for many years. One thing they cannot seem to agree on is which Green option is the best in both environmentally friendly and indeed financial terms.

Biofuel

A vehicle can become more environmentally friendly by mixing in renewable fuels. Typical petrol cars can tolerate up to 15% ethanol. Another option is a flexible-fuel vehicle which allows a varying mixture of petrol and ethanol.

Currently the lowest emission fuel available for diesel engines is bio-diesel. Often a diesel engine can transition 100% to run on bio-diesel, however, bio-diesel causes problems simply because it removes all of the built-up residue in an engine which in turn can clog filters and cause breakdowns and costly repairs.

Most of the big name s in the motor industry produce bio fuel vehicles including Chrysler, Ford and Volvo.
Many environmentalists doubt the green credentials of bio fuel simply because it uses food resources in order to provide mechanical energy for vehicles. Many experts point to this as a reason for growing food prices. So in order to have a low environmental impact, biofuels should be made only from waste products, or from new sources - i.e. algae.

Electric

Electric cars by their design do not need Petrol or Diesel to run (although some manufacturers do believe a fossil fuel / electric hybrid to be the greenest route). Electric motors often achieve 90% energy conversion efficiency. They can also be combined with regenerative braking systems that have the ability to convert movement energy back into stored electricity. This can be used to reduce the wear on brake systems and reduce the total energy requirement of a trip.

At face value electric cars seem the logical step forward however it all depends on how the electricity that charges them is produced (via a wind turbine is more environmentally friendly than that created by the use of fossil fuels).

Electric cars are appearing more and more on UK roads with many major manufacturers (Citroen, Fiat etc) investing heavily in promoting their green alternatives.

Fuel Cell

A fuel cell is an electrochemical conversion device that produces electricity from fuel and an oxidant, which react in the presence of an electrolyte. The reactants flow into the cell, and the reaction products flow out of it, while the electrolyte remains within it.

Many combinations of fuels and oxidants are possible. A hydrogen fuel cell uses hydrogen as its fuel and oxygen (usually from air) as its oxidant. Other fuels include hydrocarbons and alcohols. Other oxidants include chlorine and chlorine dioxide.

Developments are being made all the time (indeed some manufacturers
have released hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicles, e.g. The Honda FCX Clarity) fuel cell technology is said to be very expensive.

Hybrid

Hybrid cars generally use a combination of two power sources. The most common hybrids currently available on the market use both electric motors and the petrol combustion engines. Batteries charge and act as a storage device to power an electric motor, usually working when the vehicle is travelling at low speed or in traffic. The petrol engine, usually a small efficient unit, then powers the car when more power is needed such as at higher speeds allowing the combustion engine to only operate at its more optimum efficient speeds.

The combustion engine along with regenerative braking is used to recharge the battery therefore hybrid cars do not need to be plugged in and charged up. This combination of battery power and internal combustion engine produces less pollution and CO2 as no gases are released when the electric motor is running.

The Toyota Prius is probably the best known hybrid vehicle (due to its celebrity buyers) however many manufacturers produce their own hybrid vehicles in the UK including Honda and Lexus.

If a new green car is beyond your means remember you can help save the environment simply by using recycled car parts.

Wind Power Design - Vertical Or Horizontal?

What are my Choices?

There are not many choices where wind turbines are concerned. They are either on a vertical axis or a horizontal axis. On the Sierra Nevada where the strong winds blow, the wind power design for turbines are horizontal. Those huge structures with rotating blades generate a whole lot of electricity, believe me.

For your private home, though, the better wind power design is the vertical windmill. That is where the turbine is high on a tall tower located 15 feet above the ground. A radius of 300 feet around the base of the tower is clear of objects that might cause turbulence.

Why is a vertical turbine better for your home than a sleeping, horizontal one? Easy question. The vertical windmill does not get slapped around by high winds. It faces the same direction regardless of which way the wind blows. This orientation is particularly important if you are in a blustery place with frequent shifts in the wind direction.

The generator in a vertical wind power design is close to the ground. That makes it easier for you to access it when it requires some routine maintenance. You can also set up a vertical windmill faster and more cheaply than a horizontal wind power design.

Ups and Downs of Wind Power Designs

The downside to the vertical wind turbine is that it is noisy. You probably have to place it far away from your main residence if you want to get any sleep at night. That means you have got to have lots of land. An acre or more, at least. It might rule out your small lawn with the rose bushes. Another bothersome thing is that any vibration along the vertical axis tends to affect the wind power. The structure can seem a bit rickety if it is banged on pretty hard.

On the other hand, the horizontal wind power design is not affected by hard knocks on its axis. But the wind direction affects the efficiency of the horizontal turbine big time. It needs to re-orientate itself to the new wind direction every time there is a change in the way the wind blows. That cuts down its ability to generate electricity reliably. Without a steady wind, the horizontal wind power design does not function as well as the vertical wind turbine.

The blades of vertical and horizontal design spin at different rates. The vertical wind turbine rotates at a lower velocity compared to the horizontal blades. There is also a much narrower space for the blades to cover in a vertically designed wind turbine. That spells good news for nature lovers because birds do not get caught and sliced in two by the blades of a vertical wind power design. However, horizontal turbine blades are known to be merciless to birds. You will find plenty of feathers around the base of the turbine to prove my point.

Is 2012 Doomsday For Real?

*Numbers in () are background references, they are listed at the bottom.*

It turns out that the idea of doomsday (1) in or around 2012 is not far fetched at all. Although it won't happen quite like the movie, but rather the old fashion way - war.

The movie "2012" is coming out in theaters on November 13, 2009. Based on the movie trailer (2), it looks like the Earth will be destroyed in 2012 by meteorites, earthquakes, giant waves and more. The question is - could it really happen?

There is no particular reason that the Earth should experience a series of supernatural events in 2012. Yes, the Mayan calendar ends on December 21, 2012, but there is absolutely no evidence that date means anything in real life.

Unfortunately, real life is going to be even scarier than the movie. Imagine going to bed one night and waking up to a destroyed America. That's assuming you even wake up. That's the kind of scenario that is becoming more and more possible, and might really happen around 2012.

The world has not seen a major world war for over 60 years. The idea that this type of war could even occur is beyond the imagination of most people. Yet, a major nuclear war (3) is now more likely than it has ever been.

To understand why a major nuclear war is likely one must look back at how prior wars started (4). For example, what were the conditions (5) that caused World War I to start, and are they present today?

The first condition for World War I is a declining superpower. Britain was already in decline in 1914 and was just not up to the task of confronting Germany.

Today it is the United States that is in decline (6). We have trillion dollar deficits as far as the eye can see. The nation is divided politically. Soon our standard of living must start decreasing.

The impact of this decline should not be underestimated. It is huge.

The idea is that a certain world order that has existed for many years is in the state of change. This period can be very dangerous.

The second condition is powerful rivals. This was Germany in 1914, and today it's Russia (7) and China.

China is busy taking the profits it earned from the United States and building more nuclear-tipped missiles to point at us. Russia is busy upgrading its nuclear missiles and warheads.

Additionally, for some reason both Russia (8) and China (9) are investing a lot of resources building underground nuclear bunkers capable of protecting millions of people.

The third condition is weakened alliances. Currently NATO has no clear purpose. The Europeans are not fond of the United States and most likely would not come to our defense in a nuclear war.

The alliance with South Korea is very weak because the people have become more and more anti-American.

Even the alliance with Japan is set to change with the recent election of a new political party to power.

The fourth condition is the existence of terrorist supporting states. That was Yugoslavia in 1914, and today it's Iran, Syria, Lebanon and other Islamic states.

The fifth condition is the existence of terrorist organizations. They existed in Yugoslavia in 1914, and today there are Al Qaeda, Hezbollah, Hamas and more.

The first three conditions set the stage for war but might not necessarily start a war. The last two provide the catalyst to actually start the war.

There are other conditions that one could use to determine if war is near. For example, there are the three Es of war (10): Empires in decline, economic volatility and ethnic conflict. These are all present today.

The United States is in decline. Russia and China are experiencing economic volatility due to the global financial crisis. Ethnic conflict is a major source of problems in the Middle East.

Another way to understand war is to look at how major wars tend to follow cycles (the cycles of war) (11) based on the human life span. As a crisis generation gets older and starts to die, the younger generations (12), having not directly experienced a major crisis involving war, start to become susceptible to a major new war.

The cycles of war point to a major crisis occurring between 2005 and 2025.

You can see our susceptibility increasing as Obama is cutting the number of nuclear weapons down to 1,500 and possibly even 1,000. A major attack by both Russia and China means that we can retaliate once then we have nothing left. Meanwhile, millions of Russians and Chinese can wait us out in their nuclear bunkers.

Could they wait us out if they knew we could retaliate four or five times over several years?

How would a nuclear war start (13)?

Recently, we learned that Iran has enough uranium to build one nuclear bomb. It doesn't actually have a bomb, but it could build one if it wanted to. Additionally, it is building enough centrifuges over five years to create about 25 bombs per year.

We have now crossed a threshold where Israel must act. In a couple of years Iran will be in position to have 20 or 30 nuclear bombs. This is intolerable to Israel, and a very real threat to its existence.

In the next year or two Israel must attack Iran and destroy or cripple its ability to create nuclear weapons.

What do you think will happen after Israel attacks Iran?

Iran will launch a coordinated attack against Israel using Syria, Lebanon (Hezbollah) and Hamas. They will seek to destroy Israel once and for all.

Both Syria (14) and Hezbollah (15) have chemical weapons that could be launched on Israeli cities.

What do you think would go through the mind of a Jew when chemical weapons are exploding over Israeli cities?

There can be only one response: nuclear. Whoever would dare to use chemical weapons against Israel will be obliterated with nuclear weapons.

Once Israel starts using nuclear weapons then it must destroy all of its hostile neighbors. That means about 10 to 15 million deaths will occur over a short period of time.

Naturally the rest of the world would be pretty upset at Israel, and America would be blamed too.

Is that a good reason to launch a nuclear war against America? It turns out that the answer is yes, but not right away. It will take a few years to properly prepare for nuclear war against America.

The normal scenario where a small conflict escalates into a major nuclear war will not happen. In this case a small nuclear war will not escalate, but rather it will die out. The escalation will occur a few years later when the entire world is not expecting anything to happen. It will come out of the blue for no apparent reason.

Back in 2008 a Russian general (16) announced that Russia reserved the right to use nuclear weapons preemptively to protect itself and its allies. Okay, but which countries are allies of Russia?

Syria is an ally (17) of Russia.

So Russia is already telling us that if Syria is destroyed by Israel then Russia may launch a nuclear strike over this event.

Doesn't Russia have a lot to lose by going to war with America? The article, Beware Failing Rogues (18), describes how economically distressed states might go to war. The more a state has to lose, the less likely it is to risk losing it. However, Russia is looking more and more like an economically distressed state due to the huge drop in the price of oil.

Russia has another big problem in that its military is declining. It simply cannot upgrade its military equipment faster than it is degrading. So there will be a significant reduction in Russia's nuclear missiles in the next 15 years. Analysts expect Russia's nuclear missiles to eventually stabilize at around 300 in the next 15 years.

By 2030, America will probably have the technology to take out most of the Russian missiles during their boost phase. This will be a disaster for Russia.

So Russia has a window over the next ten years where it can destroy America. After that period Russia may have to start living under the thumb of America for a long time.

What about China?

Already one can read about the thousands of protests each year from unhappy citizens. The environmental pollution is so bad that it is devastating to the people. The country's one-child policy is a demographics disaster. The country's leadership is mostly unresponsive to the complaints of the people. There are significant water problems covering large portions of the country. There's wife kidnapping because men are getting desperate for a wife, and this will get worse. There are abandoned little girls because the parents wanted boys instead.

Even though things don't look too bad in China right now, they can easily change due to the above mentioned internal problems.

If you want to see what nuclear war looks like then check out this YouTube film clip from the movie, "The Day After". (19)

In conclusion, a nuclear war in the Middle East will act as a sign that the United States could be subject to nuclear retaliation from Russia and China. The actual retaliation would probably take two to three years to occur in order to give Russia and Chine time to prepare.

Obama Wins 2009 Nobel Peace Prize

One of the most surprising winners of any Nobel Prize was won by current US president, Barack Obama. The Nobel Committee stated that the reason he won the prize because of how strong and determined he was to encourage international diplomacy and co-operation between the people of the world.

There were a couple of favorites like the current Prime Minister of Zimbabwe, Morgan Tsvangirai or the Chinese dissident Hu Jia. However, it was odd to see Barack Obama to win the Nobel Prize because he has been the president for just less than a year and with not much other experience. The Nobel Committee concluded that he gave people around the world so much hope and aspirations and worked hard to make the world nuclear bomb free.

Ever since he has been in office, Barack Obama has engaged in international agenda's like promoting peace in the Middle East and working hard to eradicate Iran's nuclear program. This is in contrast to the previous president who was unpopular among most of the world leaders. Even the French president, Nicolas Sarkozy has praised the US president and stated that America has once again gained the hearts and minds of the people of the world.

President Barack Obama wasn't the only US president that has won a Nobel Prize. Woodrow Wilson won it in 1919 and Theodore Roosevelt also won in 1906. The Nobel Prize was original conceived and invented by the powerful and rich Swede, Alfred Nobel. The first award was given out in 1901.
